بربك هل ترى في السكبِ عارا
وكيفand how وفىand in التكسبearning a living طيبcontentment نفسيmy soul
وكيف وفى التكسب طيب نفسي
By your Lord, do you see any shame in pouring?
By your father, do you see shame in earning?
And how could you, when earning a living brings my soul contentment?
How could honest work sully my spirit?
فلاso do not تكثرُbe excessive بشكركَwith your thanks ليto me فخيرٌfor better
فلا تكثرُ بشكركَ لي فخيرٌ
لديّto me دريهمٌa little dirham منthan ألفa thousand مِرسي“merci” (thank you)
لديّ دريهمٌ من ألف مِرسي
So do not lavish your thanks on me, for better
Spare me your excess gratitude, for I'd prefer
to me is a little dirham than a thousand “mercis.”
A single dirham to a thousand thank you's.
