O lover, taken captive
O lover whom my glances have subdued,
by the victorious armies of my glances,
And mounted on passion’s steed to ride,

وامتطى صهوة الغرام وأمضى

who mounted passion's saddle and spent
Who passed in my disdain his days and months,
his days and months in our love:

This portrait of mine has glided gracefully to you;

The firmaments a time should prove unkind,
وإذاand if عزّتbecame unattainable الهيولىthe material substance زماناًfor a time
وإذا عزّت الهيولى زماناً
فمنthen it is of الرأيsound judgment الاكتفاbeing content بالصورهwith the form
فمن الرأي الاكتفا بالصوره
And if the substance is beyond reach for a time,
‘Twere well in reason to content oneself
then it is wise to be content with the form.
With only the ideal form and dream.
