قضى حسينُ وهل حزنٌ بلا سببِ
والصقرand the falcon صيدwas caught فياso O للقومpeople, to the rescue للعجبِat this marvel
والصقر صيد فيا للقوم للعجبِ
Husayn has passed away—and is sorrow ever without a cause?
Husain met his fate, yet what cause is there for grief?
And the falcon was caught—O people, how astonishing!
The hawk takes its prey - strange are the ways of men!
وشخصهand his body غابvanished فيin هذاthis الثرىsoil وثوىand lay at rest
وشخصه غاب في هذا الثرى وثوى
وقدُرهand his stature بينamong أهلpeople of الفضلmerit لمdid not يغبِvanish
وقدُره بين أهل الفضل لم يغبِ
And his body vanished into this soil and lay at rest,
His person lies buried beneath earth's dust,
Yet his stature among people of merit has not vanished.
Yet his name lives on among the nobility.
وسارand he journeyed للخلدto eternity والدنياand the world تؤرخهdates his passing
وسار للخلد والدنيا تؤرخه
حسينُHusayn ماتdied فماso not الفهمunderstanding كالأدبِlike literature
حسينُ مات فما الفهم كالأدبِ
And he journeyed to eternity, while the world dates his passing:
He journeyed to eternity, and history records him -
Husayn has died—so understanding is not like literature.
Husain died, but wisdom and courtesy live on.
