كأنها قرط خُودٍ أو فؤاد شجٍ
لاقَىhas encountered وإلاّand otherwise قلبthe heart رعديدِa coward
لاقَى وإلاّ قلب رعديدِ
As though it were a maiden’s earring, or the heart of one in sorrow
As if it were a cheek's earring or a wounded heart,
Who has had an encounter—or else a coward’s heart.
It encountered naught but a quivering heart.
