وقالواand they said احتسَىdrank هذاthis الشَويشُthe sergeant مدامةًwine
وقالوا احتسَى هذا الشَويشُ مدامةً
ألمdid you not ترَهُsee him للبشرfor cheerfulness يبديhe displays وللأنسِand for conviviality
ألم ترَهُ للبشر يبدي وللأنسِ
And they said, “This sergeant has drunk wine—
They said this noise has become drunk
Have you not seen him displaying cheerfulness and conviviality?”
Have you not seen him being friendly to people and sociable
وماand not ذاقhe tasted طعمthe taste of الخمرwine يوماًever وإنماbut rather
وما ذاق طعم الخمر يوماً وإنما
بهin him نشوةٌelation منfrom كثرةِan excess of الأكلِeating للعدْسِof lentils
به نشوةٌ من كثرةِ الأكلِ للعدْسِ
Yet he has never tasted wine; rather,
And he has never tasted wine
His elation comes from eating too many lentils.
Rather he feels elated from eating too much lentils
