فلقدfor indeed رثىfelt pity لصبابتيfor my ardent longing الأعداءُthe enemies
He spoke truly who said, “Love is suffering.”
For my enemies have indeed pitied my ardent longing.
فيon كلevery يومday منكfrom you تبدوappears قسوةٌcruelty
ويلوحand looms صدّrejection قاتلٌdeadly وجفاءُand estrangement
Each day, some cruelty from you comes to light,
And deadly rejection and estrangement loom.
ياO منyou whose تعلمتlearned الغصونthe branches دلالهhis coy charm
وحكتand imitated رخيمmellow حديثهhis speech الورقاءُthe gray dove
O you whose coy charm the branches have learned,
And whose mellow speech the gray dove has imitated:
هلاّwhy not شفيتُI was healed ببردwith the coolness of ثغركyour mouth عاشقاًas a lover
إنّindeed الشفاهthe lips كماas علمتyou know شفاءُa cure
Why have I, a lover, not been healed by the coolness of your mouth?
Indeed, lips, as you know, are a cure.
