Who will tell your physician on my behalf that he
My doctor informs you that he
cuts through my entrails and my ribs with his scalpel?
Will stab my lungs and ribs with his scalpel

منfrom إثْرthe aftermath of طعنتهِhis stab السعالُthe cough مشايعيmy ally
My chest tells you the truth, for there appeared,
My chest will tell you the truth when
in the wake of his stab, a cough as my ally.
Coughing accompanies his stab wounds
فلئنso if indeed سكتُّI fell silent فمنthen from ضروراتِthe necessities of الأسىgrief
ولئنand if indeed سعلتُI coughed فزفرةthen a sigh المتفجعِthe grief-stricken one
So if I fall silent, it is because grief demands it;
If I stay silent, it's from the agony
and if I cough, it is a grief-stricken person's sigh.
If I cough, it's the grief-stricken's wheeze
ولئنand if indeed بكيتI wept فإنماthen it is only لتذكريbecause I remember
عينيكyour eyes تفتحbeing opened بالسنانwith the spearhead المشْرَعِleveled
And if I weep, it is only because I remember
If I cry, it's to remember
your eyes being opened with the leveled spearhead.
Your eyes opening with bared teeth
عجباًhow strange! جفونكyour eyelids دائماًalways مغموضةclosed
وأبيتُand I spend the night محصيةَcounting النجومthe stars الظلّعِlimping
How strange! Your eyelids are always closed,
Strange that your eyelids are always closed
while I spend the night counting the limping stars.
And you refuse to count the bright stars
ماnot زلتI ceased أرقبهاI watch them تروحgo in the evening وتغتديand go in the morning
بالليلat night حتىuntil قدindeed جفانيhas shunned me مضجعيmy bed
I keep watching them pass at evening and at dawn,
I still watch them go and return
through the night, until my bed has shunned me.
At night until my bed abandons me
فاسلمso be well أبيmy father وانظرand look إليّat me برأفةwith compassion
عينيmy eye فداؤكyour ransom كيso that أقرّI find peace ومسمعيand my hearing
So be well, my father, and look at me with compassion;
So spare my father and look at me with mercy
let my eye and my hearing be your ransom, so that I may find peace.
My eyes are yours to ransom so I may rest and hear
