    وإن تغيَّرَ يعنيه تغيُّرهُ

    Another, when Time's face turns dust-gray, fears it;

and if it changes, its change concerns him.

Time is no matter of consequence that I should fear it.

One like me, whenever he wills, forbids it and commands it.

It decrees as it wills; I do not fear its consequences,

nor does its darkening trouble me.

Nor, when its calamities knock upon my heart,

does it quake at them, nor does its patient endurance fail.

    فليس يصدأ بالأعراض جوهره

    And a noble man is like unworked gold, wherever he may be;

so his essence does not rust through passing circumstances.

Nor do I find any appeal in a meager livelihood,

even if its smallest share satisfies some people.

Wait, O Time, until I gather fruit,

for most of my life has passed in planting.

Be, O Time, as I desire, for I have

merit that people of merit know and esteem.

My words unbind magic and bind it,

and my thoughts string pearls and scatter them.

When crisis calls and demands an address, no

equal is called by its pulpit to settle the matter.

And I have a reed pen like a spearhead; its stroke

sometimes brings glad tidings to the universe and warns it.

It has strokes before which minds crumble,

as though its lines were breaths of magic.

It reveals a secret's mysteries: never has it been pondered

by a thinker without his reflection exhausting him.

Its praise is hoped for, and its satire is always feared,

as long as its good and its evil remain visible.

I praise a man so long as his character is sound,

until, when his character sickens, I satirize him and shun him.

I hold my tongue too noble for discussion

with one who does not know my worth, and I honor it.

    فإن بدا مشكل قامت تفسرهُ

    And I use a hand instead, whose gesture suffices;

then, if an obscurity appears, it sets about explaining it.

And how much of my writing has spread among humankind!

The blind notice its radiance and behold it.

And the deaf listen to my speech when I utter it,

and understand its intent when I mention it.

And affairs obey my hand: this one I advance

to lofty ranks, and that one I hold back for a time,

so that I seem to be the Solomon of the age, and no

command I issue to whomever you wish is refused.
