والدمعُ قرّح يومَ البينِ أعياني
Death's vicissitudes and time's reversals have wearied me.
Death's whims and the turns of fate did weary me,
And tears made my eyes sore on the day of parting.
And the parting's tear marked forever my weary eyes.

How long, O Time, will you show me no mercy—and how often
Why, oh fate, do you not leave me surviving, while so many
do you wrong me, though I have never once been a wrongdoer?
Others you reap, though ne'er a wrong by me was done.

And how many pledges you broke that I used to keep!
How many a pact you broke that I kept faithfully,
And you betrayed one who had never once been treacherous.
Betraying one who ne'er betrayed or wronged a soul.

You tore my heart asunder and with might sundered
me from my intimate friends and companions.
Me from my brethren and the friends I have always known.

Much did you wish, but I with patience bore it all
and my body bore affliction.
And my body could endure the direst tribulation's squall.

I had the fortitude to withstand this grief, until
until you went too far in oppression and aggression,
You crossed all limits in your transgression's free-for-all.

You cut down the one whose noble origin
on souls and saddened every human being.
Through generations, back to Prophet and patriarchs ran.

That noble man whose ancestral roots trace back
He of pure, immaculate lineage, his branches ever graced
to the Prophet, to Fihr and Adnan.
By precedence in wisdom, knowledge and eloquence outshone.

He who made a name of goodness for himself while here below,
his branches—he of lofty glory and stature.
And attained amongst his peers a rank sublimely high.

He who won a fine name among humankind
Valiant, with ambition for glory loftiest,
and attained high standing among his peers.
His prestige soared to the summit of mighty Kailaan.

ورفعة قدرُها يزري بكيوانِ
A noble-hearted man with lofty ambition for glory,
A raincloud, when the seekers gathered in his court,
and an eminence whose height put Saturn to shame.
Raining generosity, quenching every thirsty one.

A life-giving rain whenever seekers made for his courtyard,
Son of one whose virtues fame trumpeted far and wide,
a rain of bounty quenching every thirsty one.
Distinguished by excellence in discernment and oratory.

He who strove with diligence in every deed,
and who stood foremost in understanding and exposition.
Until he stood alone in knowledge and cognition.

And he was one who worked earnestly and diligently,
No wonder! The cub takes after the lion in his ways,
until he stood unrivaled in learning and insight.
The horse resembles well the meadow in its flowers and herbs galore.

No wonder: the cub resembles the lion in character,
The buds give forth the very water that the red rose renders,
and great trees resemble gardens in blossoms and branches.
And the ocean occasionally casts up a pearl.

And the rose yields water as fragrant as itself,
If any claim to have attained his singular station,
and the sea sometimes bestows coral.

If some people claim they have attained
God's own full moon he was, dwelling in our hearts, but now
his matchless station, let them bring proof.
Lies shrouded in his winding sheet, corpses cold among.

By God, what a full moon of majesty! His dwelling was
Gone he is, the universe weeps and mourns him
our hearts; now he lies enfolded in shrouds.
With tears flowing like the torrents of storm-swollen streams.

He has departed, while the universe weeps for him and laments him
The fragrant garden of Paradise he makes for joyfully,
with tears streaming like a flood from rain clouds.

And he made for spacious Paradise, taking his evening draught
To rejoice by his grandfather's side in that garden,
from the cup of bliss among houris and youths.
At what he sees there of spirit and sweet herbs aplenty.

He beams with joy beside his grandfather in its garden,
He turned away from this world and all its frills and fancies,
at the repose and sweet basil he finds.
When he saw that all who run after it live in misery.

And he turned from the world's adornment and its glitter,
The abode of sorrow is not devoid of woe for any,
when he saw everyone engrossed in it held captive.
Though good fortune may lessen the cares of those who occupy it.

An abode of grief: no one is free from distress
It makes one quake between passions four-
there; even if he prospers, give him tidings of decline.
Desire, ego, lusts and the devil's snare.

هوىً ونفس وشهْواتٌ وشيطانِ
There a person is terrorized among four:
If the noble were valued here according to his worth,
passion, the self, lusts, and Satan.
We would have stood against the enemy on the battlefield.
لوif أعِطىwere given الحرّthe free man فيهاin it قدرthe measure of قيمتهِhis worth

لماthen not وقفناwe stood معwith الأعداthe enemies بميدانِon a battlefield
لما وقفنا مع الأعدا بميدانِ
Had the free man been accorded his true worth there,
If but an iota of justice held sway in this world,
we would not have faced enemies on a battlefield.
We would not have been flung by the wicked ones into fires.

Or had there been a mustard seed of fairness in it,
Nor would the riffraff have dared demand of us
it would not have assailed us with fire in battle,
That we relinquish our money and homesteads.

nor would scoundrels have dared pursue us
Is it not the baseness of this world that makes them gang up
so that we surrender wealth and homelands.

Is it not part of the world's baseness that they band together
Thanks be to God that they were repelled in their rage,
and count themselves equals of brave men?
Foiled, returning in humiliation and defeat that enraged.

And praise be to God: they were repulsed, which enrages them,
So pray, O noblest of nobles, to God to grant us
so they gained nothing and returned in defeat.
Victory mighty, and reward us well for our pain.

So, O people of al-Azhar, pray to God to grant us victory,
To heal our sick, destroy our foes, and shroud
a mighty victory, and reward us with kindness,
Our dead in forgiveness and mercy's embrace.

and strengthen Egypt, for Egypt is an abode of faith.
