    By your Lord, O Zaydan, did you know

    That blood dyes the earth's skin,

    And that forms of death fill its face,

    So there is no place where fire does not blaze?

    ألا إن بطن الأرض أنجىَ وأسلمُ

    So you loathed the earth's back and chose its belly instead;

    Behold, the earth's belly offers surer deliverance and greater safety.

    And you shunned palaces adorned with lamps,

    And a dark grave in the barren wastes pleased you.

    And what is the beauty of a palace where everyone is afraid,

    Beside a grave that holds an inviolable home?

    You found comfort with those beneath the soil, praising the night journey,

    And ʿAbd Ḍaḥm and Jurhum distracted you from us.

    O Zaydan, you did not treat us fairly when you left us

    Weeping over you, while you smile.

    You forgot, but we did not forget our affection; and we

    Are indeed in misery over you, while you enjoy bliss.

    So you parted from us deliberately, while we are in need

    Of one who does justice to history among us and judges.

    Come, then, and chronicle for mankind events

    At whose horror children turn gray and grow old.

    And sharpen a keen reed pen for writing,

    For an age has come, brimming with events.

    If indeed what you chronicled in a time gone by was

    Great, then what we face today is greater.

    Cannons before which ears are deafened,

    And Hell issues from their mouths.

    When they open their mouths for battle,

    They pound the rooted mountains and shatter fortresses.

    إذا زال منها أرقم صال أرقمُ

    And ships vie in their course like speckled serpents;

    When one serpent among them is gone, another serpent attacks.

    When a few of them glide toward a stronghold,

    Nothing shields one from what spews death.

    تطيح بمرماها سفائنُ عوّمُ

    And a submarine, like a whale, swims unseen;

    Ships afloat founder under its fire.

    And an aircraft whose flight the eagle cannot match,

    Points out the enemy army and bombards it.

    Then at times there plunge from it, like thunderbolts,

    Balls; at other times, arrows are aimed.

    And a tube from which liquids flow,

    Turning the atmosphere's air into what blinds and strikes dumb.

    إذا اشتمّ منها القوم فالقوم جُثمُ

    Whenever they leave their tube, they become a howling gale;

    When people inhale some of it, they lie prostrate.

    وفي البرِّ أعضاد تطير ومعصمُ

    So in the sky, thunderous blasting; in the sea, swirling flame;

    And on land fly upper arms and a wrist.

    وفي كل دار أينما سرت مأتمُ

    And in every gathering-place, wailing and grief;

    And in every house, wherever you go, a mourning gathering.

    So neither aged man nor youth was free of weeping,

    Nor was any married or unmarried woman free of it.

    O pity the young men who plunge into its depths!

    And woe to the young men who drew back from death!

    You are right; so enjoy bliss where you are, with those

    You love, and pitch your tent among them where they pitched theirs.

    And take pride in a home where there is no mutual hatred,

    And vie in boasting of a rule free of tyranny.

    وإن عَز نطقٌ فالهلالُ يترجمُ

    And though you are absent from us, your two sons offer solace;

    And if speech is beyond reach, al-Hilal speaks for you.
