أرحْgive rest فؤادكَyour heart مماfrom what أنتَyou لاقيهِfacing it
أرحْ فؤادكَ مما أنتَ لاقيهِ
وباعدand keep away القلبَthe heart عنfrom كدٍّhardship يعانيهِendures it
وباعد القلبَ عن كدٍّ يعانيهِ
Give your heart rest from what you will face.
Relieve your heart from what you are enduring,
And keep the heart away from the hardship it endures.
And keep the heart away from toil and suffering.
واستبقand save نفسكَyourself منfrom حبِlove تزاولهُyou engage in it
واستبق نفسكَ من حبِ تزاولهُ
وْأسفْand grieve علىover عُمرُa lifetime ضيعتهُyou squandered it فيهِin it
وْأسفْ على عُمرُ ضيعتهُ فيهِ
And save yourself from a love you pursue.
Rescue yourself from the love you engage in,
And grieve over a lifetime you squandered on it.
And grieve for a life you wasted on it.
ماno فيin الصباباتِardent longings والأهواءِand passions منفعةًbenefit
ما في الصباباتِ والأهواءِ منفعةً
إذاwhen غداbecomes الصبّthe lovesick lover والمحبوبِand the beloved جافيهِshunning him
إذا غدا الصبّ والمحبوبِ جافيهِ
There is no benefit in ardent longings and passions
Of youthful passions and whims no benefit comes,
When the lover’s beloved turns away from him.
If youth and the beloved turn unfeeling.
قدindeed تَيَّمتكshe has enthralled you مهاةٌa white oryx تزدريshe disdains قمراًa moon
قد تَيَّمتك مهاةٌ تزدري قمراً
والحسنُand beauty فيin وجههاher face تمتhave been perfected معانيهِits meanings
والحسنُ في وجهها تمت معانيهِ
A white oryx has enthralled you, disdaining the moon.
You were struck by a beauty scorning the moon,
And beauty’s meanings have been perfected in her face.
Perfection on her face, its meanings complete.
وأوقدتand she kindled فيin صميمِthe innermost core القلبِthe heart نارa fire هوىpassion
وأوقدت في صميمِ القلبِ نار هوى
وجرَّعَتكَand she made you drink كؤوسَcups الصدّrejection والتيهِand haughtiness
وجرَّعَتكَ كؤوسَ الصدّ والتيهِ
And she kindled a fire of passion in the heart’s innermost core,
And kindled in your heart’s core the fire of love,
And made you drink cups of rejection and haughtiness.
Made you drink the cups of rejection and loss.
فاصبرso be patient علىwith الحبlove إنif لمnot تستطعyou can بدَلاًan alternative
فاصبر على الحب إن لم تستطع بدَلاً
والصبّand the lovesick lover أيسرُthe least ماwhat فيin الصبرِpatience يكفيهِis enough for him
والصبّ أيسرُ ما في الصبرِ يكفيهِ
So endure love patiently if you can find no alternative,
So be patient with love if you can’t find a substitute,
And the least measure of patience suffices the lovesick lover.
For patience is easiest for the lover to endure.
ماnot أنتَyou أولَthe first حِبٍّa lover نالهُbefell him شططٌinjustice
ما أنتَ أولَ حِبٍّ نالهُ شططٌ
متيمٍenthralled فيin الهوىpassion الحبِlove شافيهِhis healer
متيمٍ في الهوى الحبِ شافيهِ
You are not the first lover afflicted by injustice,
You’re not the first that unrestrained love befell,
Enthralled by passion, with love as his healer.
A longing soul consumed by love’s remedy.
