وَدِدتُI wished وَبَيتِby the House of اللَهِGod لَوif only أَنَّthat أَنفَهُhis nose
وَدِدتُ وَبَيتِ اللَهِ لَو أَنَّ أَنفَهُ
هَواءٌempty air فَماso not مَتَّhe pulled المُخاطَthe mucus عَنِaway from العَظمِthe bone
هَواءٌ فَما مَتَّ المُخاطَ عَنِ العَظمِ
I wished, by the House of God, that his nose
I wish, by the House of God, that his nose were but air,
were empty air, so he would not pull mucus away from the bone.
Then would the mucus not leave the bone.
وَلَكِنَّماbut only لاقاهُmet him سَيفُthe sword of اِبنِthe son of عَمِّهِhis paternal uncle
وَلَكِنَّما لاقاهُ سَيفُ اِبنِ عَمِّهِ
فَأَبَّso it cut وَمَرَّand passed السَيفُthe sword مِنهُof him عَلىacross الخَطمِthe snout
فَأَبَّ وَمَرَّ السَيفُ مِنهُ عَلى الخَطمِ
But it was only his paternal cousin’s sword that met him;
But it was met by the sword of his cousin,
so it cut, and the sword passed across his snout.
So it refused and the sword slipped over his nose.
