Ah, Sawda's promises to you have gone unfulfilled;
And the Farqad stars are nearer than what you hoped for from her.
تُمَنّينَناyou promise us غَدواًthe morrow وَغَيمُكُمُand your cloud غَداًtomorrow
ضَبابٌfog فَلاso no صَحوٌclear sky وَلاand not الغَيمُthe cloud جائِدُrain-giving
You promise us tomorrow, yet tomorrow your cloud
Is fog: neither clear sky nor a cloud that gives rain.
إِذاif أَنتَyou أُعطيتَyou are given الغِنىwealth ثُمَّthen لَمnot تَجُدyou give generously
بِفَضلِfrom the surplus of الغِنىwealth أُلفيتَyou will be found ماnot لَكَfor you حامِدُanyone who praises
If you are given wealth and then do not give generously
Of your surplus wealth, you will be found with none to praise you.
وَماذاand what يُعَدّيcan ward off المالُwealth عَنكَfrom you وَجَمعُهُand amassing it
إِذاwhen كانَit becomes ميراثاًan inheritance وَواراكَand has buried you لاحِدُa gravedigger
And what can wealth and amassing it ward off from you,
When it becomes an inheritance and a gravedigger has buried you?
