وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَستَحيِيam truly ashamed صِحابِيَmy companions أَنthat يَرَواthey see
مَكانَthe place يَديmy hand فيin جانِبِthe side of الزادِthe food أَقرَعاbare
And I am ashamed that my companions should see
And I am truly ashamed for my companions to see
the spot my hand has cleared bare beside the provisions.
My hand's place at the side of the food stripped bare.
أُقَصِّرُI hold back كَفّيmy palm أَنlest تَنالَit touches أَكُفَّهُمtheir palms
إِذاwhen نَحنُwe أَهوَيناwe reach down وَحاجاتُناand our needs مَعاtogether
I hold my hand back from reaching theirs
I hold my palm back lest it touch their palms
when we reach in together, our needs all alike.
When we reach down together, all of us in need.
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you مَهماwhatever تُعطِyou give بَطنَكَyour belly سُؤلَهُits desire
وَفَرجَكَand your private parts نالاthe two attain مُنتَهىthe utmost limit of الذَمِّblame أَجمَعاboth together
For whatever you grant your belly of its craving—
And indeed, if you grant your belly whatever it craves,
and your loins—the pair reap the utmost blame.
And your loins theirs, both together earn the utmost blame.
أَبيتُI spend the night خَميصَhollow البَطنِthe belly مُضطَمِرَshrunken الحَشىthe innards
حَياءًout of shame أَخافُI fear الذَمَّblame أَنthat أَتَضَلَّعاI eat my fill
I spend the night hollow-bellied, my innards drawn tight,
I spend the night hollow-bellied, my insides drawn in,
out of shame: I fear reproach if I should eat my fill.
Out of shame, fearing blame should I eat my fill.
