And indeed, his people sought, through battling Aws,
Humiliation—and Sinbis already knew of it.

Except the sons of ‘Amr ibn Sinbis: they indeed
Guarded their father's honor, lest they be stained.
وَتَواعَدواand they agreed to meet وِردَarrival at water القُرَيَّةِal-Qurayya غُدوَةًat dawn
وَحَلَفتُand I swore بِاللَهِby God العَزيزِthe Mighty لَنُحبَسُwe shall surely be held back
And they agreed to reach al-Qurayya's water at dawn,
And I swore by God, the Mighty: we would surely be held back.

And God knows: had there come with their vanguard
Tarf al-Jarid, the day would surely have been grim.

Like fire and the sun that said to her,
But al-Luwaymis, knowing what he touches,
لاdo not تَطعَمَنَّyou taste (emphatic) الماءَthe water إِنif أَورَدتَهُمyou bring them to water

Do not taste the water if you bring them to it,
For the fullness of your flood—so prevail and hold back.

Or Dhu al-Husayn, and a horseman endowed with strength,
With a battalion: whomever they catch, he plants in the earth.
وَمُوَطَّءُand made gentle الأَكنافِthe sides غَيرُnot مُلَعَّنٍmuch cursed

And gentle of disposition, not reviled,
Within the tribe, the assembly often makes its way to him.
