وَلا أَكثَرُ الماضي الَّذي مِثلُهُ يُنسي
My people have not made me forget Māwiya’s ruined dwellings,
Ruins of a ruined abode did not make me forgetful,
Nor has most of the past, whose like makes one forget.
Nor much of the past that makes one forgetful.
إِذاwhen غَرَبَتset شَمسُthe sun of النَهارِthe day وَرَدتُهاI come to them
إِذا غَرَبَت شَمسُ النَهارِ وَرَدتُها
كَماjust as يَرِدُcomes to water الظَمآنُthe thirsty one آبِيَةَunwilling to endure الخِمسِthe five-day watering interval
كَما يَرِدُ الظَمآنُ آبِيَةَ الخِمسِ
When the sun of day sets, I come to them,
When the sun of the day went down, I returned it
As a thirsty one comes to water, unwilling to wait until the fifth day.
As the thirsty returns cloudy weather.
