ذَكَرتَyou mentioned القَرومَthe chieftains الصيدَthe proud مِنfrom آلِthe house of هاشِمٍHashim
ذَكَرتَ القَرومَ الصيدَ مِن آلِ هاشِمٍ
وَلَستَand you are not لِزورٍregarding a falsehood قُلتَهُyou uttered it بِمُصيبِcorrect
وَلَستَ لِزورٍ قُلتَهُ بِمُصيبِ
You mentioned the proud chieftains of the house of Hashim,
You mentioned the prey of hunting from the family of Hashim
but you are not right in the falsehood you uttered.
And you didn't say it falsely out of resentment
أَتَعجَبُdo you marvel? إِنif أَقصَدتَyou slew حَمزَةَHamza مِنهُمُfrom among them
أَتَعجَبُ إِن أَقصَدتَ حَمزَةَ مِنهُمُ
نَجيباًa noble man وَقَدand already سَمَّيتَهُyou called him بِنَجيبِas noble
نَجيباً وَقَد سَمَّيتَهُ بِنَجيبِ
Do you marvel if you have slain Hamza, one of them—
Are you surprised if you meant Hamza among them
a noble man, when you have already called him noble?
As a noble one, and you named him al-Najeeb
أَلَمdid ... not? يَقتُلواthey kill عَمراًAmr وَعُتبَةَand Utba وَاِبنُهُand his son
أَلَم يَقتُلوا عَمراً وَعُتبَةَ وَاِبنُهُ
وَشَيبَةَand Shayba وَالحَجّاجَand al-Hajjaj وَاِبنَand the son of حَبيبِHabib
وَشَيبَةَ وَالحَجّاجَ وَاِبنَ حَبيبِ
Did they not kill Amr, Utba, and his son,
Didn't they kill Umar, Utbah and his son
and Shayba, al-Hajjaj, and the son of Habib,
And Shaybah, al-Hajjaj and Ibn Habeeb
