إِذاwhen اللَهُGod حَيّاhonors مَعشَراًa people بِفِعالِهِمfor their deeds
وَنَصرِهِمِand their support of الرَحمَنَthe All-Merciful رَبَّLord of المَشارِقِthe places of sunrise
When God honors a people for their deeds,
When God revives a people through their deeds,
And their support of the All-Merciful, Lord of the places of sunrise,
And the Merciful Lord helps them in the east,
فَأَهلَكَthen may He destroy رَبّيmy Lord ياO عُتَيبَUtayb بنَson of مالِكٍMalik
وَلَقّاكَand may He make you meet قَبلَbefore المَوتِdeath إِحدىone of الصَواعِقِthe thunderbolts
Then may my Lord destroy you, O Utayb son of Malik,
Then may my Lord destroy you, O Utaybah bin Malik,
And bring upon you, before death, one of the thunderbolts.
And may you be struck by lightning before death.
بَسَطتَyou stretched out يَميناًa right hand لِلنَبِيِّtoward the Prophet بِرَميَةٍwith a throw
فَأَدمَيتَand you bloodied فاهُhis mouth قُطِّعَتmay it be cut to pieces بِالبَوارِقِby flashing swords
You stretched out your right hand to hurl a missile at the Prophet,
You extended your hand against the Prophet with an arrow,
And bloodied his mouth—may your hand be cut to pieces by flashing swords!
So you bloodied his mouth, torn by lightning.
فَهَلّاso why not خَشيتَyou feared اللَهَGod وَالمَنزِلَand the abode الَّذيthat
تَصيرُyou will go إِلَيهِto it بَعدَafter إِحدىone of الصَفائِقِthe calamities
Why, then, did you not fear God and the abode that
Why did you not fear God and the place
You will come to after one of the calamities?
Where you will end up after one of the calamities?
لَقَدindeed كانَwas خِزياًa disgrace فيin الحَياةِlife لِقَومِهِto his people
وَفيand at البَعثِthe resurrection بَعدَafter المَوتِdeath إِحدىone of العَوالِقِthe clinging afflictions
He was indeed a disgrace to his people in life,
It was disgraceful for his people in life,
And at resurrection, after death, one of the afflictions that cling.
And after death, one of the greatest calamities.

So who will excuse me concerning Udhra's slave, now that
So who can excuse me from Abd Udhra after
He has plunged into a pitch-dark, heaving stretch of sea?
He fell into the turbulent, stormy sea?
