إِذا ما تَرَعرَعَ فينا الغُلامُ

إِذا ما تَرَعرَعَ فينا الغُلامُ

فَما إِن يُقالُ لَهُ مَن هُوَه

فَما إِن يُقالُ لَهُ مَن هُوَه

When a boy grows up among us,

When the boy grows up among us

then no one ever asks of him, “Who is he?”

And he is asked who he loves

إِذا لَم يَسُد قَبلَ شَدِّ الإِزارِ

إِذا لَم يَسُد قَبلَ شَدِّ الإِزارِ

فَذَلِكَ فينا الَذي لا هُوَه

فَذَلِكَ فينا الَذي لا هُوَه

If he has not become a leader before tying his waistcloth,

If he doesn't confess before tying his belt

then he is a nobody among us.

Then he is not in love

وَلي صاحِبٌ مِن بَني الشَيصَبانِ

وَلي صاحِبٌ مِن بَني الشَيصَبانِ

فَطَوراً أَقولُ وَطَوراً هُوَه

فَطَوراً أَقولُ وَطَوراً هُوَه

And I have a companion from Banu al-Shayṣabān;

I have a friend from the Banu Shayban

so at times I speak, and at times he does.

Sometimes I say it is love, and sometimes not
