ماwhat بالُis the matter with عَينِكَyour eye ياO حَسّانُHassan لَمhas not تَنَمِslept
ما بالُ عَينِكَ يا حَسّانُ لَم تَنَمِ
ماnot إِنemphasizing the negation تُغَمِّضُyou close it إِلّاexcept مُؤثِمَbreaking القَسَمِthe oath
ما إِن تُغَمِّضُ إِلّا مُؤثِمَ القَسَمِ
What is the matter with your eye, O Hassan, that it has not slept?
Why do your eyes not sleep, O Hassân?
You never close it without breaking your oath.
Whenever you close them, you break your oath.
لَمdid not أَحسِبِI think الشَمسَthe sun تَبدوappears بِالعِشاءِin the evening فَقَدfor indeed
لَم أَحسِبِ الشَمسَ تَبدو بِالعِشاءِ فَقَد
لاقَيتَyou have met شَمساًa sun تُجَلّيdispels لَيلَةَthe night الظُلَمِthe darkness
لاقَيتَ شَمساً تُجَلّي لَيلَةَ الظُلَمِ
I did not think the sun would appear at evening; yet
I never thought the sun would shine at night,
you have met a sun that dispels the night of darkness.
Yet I found a sun shining in the darkness.
فَرعُthe crown النِساءِof women وَفَرعُand the crown القَومِof the people والِدُهاher father
فَرعُ النِساءِ وَفَرعُ القَومِ والِدُها
أَهلُpeople of الجَلالَةِdignity وَالإيفاءِand fulfillment بِالذِمَمِof the pledges
أَهلُ الجَلالَةِ وَالإيفاءِ بِالذِمَمِ
She is the crown of women, and her father the crown of his people,
The excellence of women and of men, their clan’s pride,
a people of dignity and fidelity to their pledges.
The people of glory and of keeping promises.
لَقَدindeed حَلَفتَyou have sworn وَلَمand did not تَحلِفswear عَلىupon كَذِبٍa falsehood
لَقَد حَلَفتَ وَلَم تَحلِف عَلى كَذِبٍ
ياO اِبنَson of الفُرَيعَةِal-Furayʿah ماnot كُلِّفتَyou were tasked مِنwith any أَمَمِan easy matter
يا اِبنَ الفُرَيعَةِ ما كُلِّفتَ مِن أَمَمِ
You have indeed sworn, and you did not swear falsely,
You have sworn, and not falsely sworn,
O son of al-Furayʿah, no easy task was laid upon you.
O son of al-Furay‘ah, you bear no burdens.
