ماwhat نَقَمتُمdid you resent مِنabout ثِيابٍgarments خِلفَةٍworn in succession
وَعَبيدٍand male slaves وَإِماءٍand female slaves وَذَهَبand gold
What fault did you find with changes of clothing,
and male slaves, female slaves, and gold?
قُلتُمُyou said بَدِّلchange! فَقَدand indeed بَدَّلَكُمhe has given you instead
سَنَةًa year of drought حَرّىscorching وَحَرباًand a war كَاللَهَبlike flame
You said, “Change!”—and you have indeed been given instead
a scorching year of drought and a war like flame.
فَفَريقٌso one group هالِكٌperishing مِنfrom عَجَفٍemaciation
وَفَريقٌand another group كانَhad أَودىperished فَذَهَبand so passed away
So one group is perishing from emaciation,
and another had perished and passed away,
إِذwhen قَتَلتُمyou killed ماجِداًa noble man ذاpossessing مِرَّةٍstrength
واضِحَradiant السُنَّةِin countenance مَعروفَwell known النَسَبin lineage
when you killed a noble man possessed of strength,
radiant of countenance, his lineage well known.
