عَلىfor قَتلىthe slain مَعونَةَMaʿūnah فَاِستَهِلّيthen weep
بِدَمعِwith tears العَينِof the eye سَحّاًin torrents غَيرَnot نَزرِscant
Then weep for the slain of Maʿūnah,
Over those killed at Ma'unah, begin
with the eye's tears pouring in torrents, not scantily.
With tears flowing abundantly from the eye
عَلىfor خَيلِthe horsemen of الرَسولِthe Messenger غَداةَon the morning لاقواthey met
مَناياهُمtheir deaths وَلاقَتهُمand met them بِقَدرِby decree
For the Messenger's horsemen, on the morning they met
Over the steeds of the Messenger when they met
their deaths, which met them by decree.
Their fate, and fate met them with destiny
أَصابَهُمُbefell them الفَناءُdestruction بِحَبلِthrough the covenant of قَومٍa people
تُخُوِّنَwas betrayed عَقدُthe bond حَبلِهِمِof their covenant بِغَدرِby treachery
Destruction befell them through a people's covenant,
Ruin befell them by the rope of a people
the bond of their covenant broken by treachery.
Whose pledge of allegiance betrays with treachery
فَياand oh لَهفيmy grief لِمُنذِرٍfor Mundhir اِذwhen تَوَلّىhe turned away
وَأَعنَقَand hastened فيtoward مَنِيَّتِهِhis death بِصَبرِwith fortitude
And oh, my grief for Mundhir, when he turned away
So, my anguish for the warner when he turned away
and hastened to his death with fortitude!
And stubbornly met his death with patience
فَكائِنand how many قَدindeed أُصيبَwas struck down غَداةَon the morning of ذاكُمthat

And how many indeed were struck down that morning—
The one fated the morning after their loss
fair, noble men from the choicest stock of ʿAmr!
From the heroic white lions of Amr's clan
