أَضَرَّhas harmed بِجِسمِيَto my body مَرُّthe passage الدُهورِthe ages
وَخانَand failed قِراعَcombat يَديmy hand الأَكحَلُthe arm-vein
The passage of ages has harmed my body,
The passing ages have wasted my body away,
And my arm-vein has failed my hand in combat.
And betrayed the tattoo on my hands,
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI used to أَشهَدُbe present at عَينَthe heart الحُروبِthe battles
وَيَحمَرُّand reddens فيin كَفِّيَmy palm المُنضُلُthe sword
Yet I used to be present in the thick of battles,
I who once looked at battle’s face undismayed,
And the sword would redden in my palm.
With weapon reddened and stained by blood.
وَرِثناwe inherited مِنَfrom المَجدِglory أُكرومَةًa noble distinction
أَحَلَّestablished بِهاthrough it الآخِرَthe successor الأَوَّلُthe forebear
We inherited from glory a noble distinction,
We inherited glory from our fathers,
Through it, the forebear established the successor.
The last of us disgracing the first.
