لَقَدindeed غَضِبَتgrew angry جَهلاًin ignorance سُلَيمٌSulaym سَفاهَةًin folly
لَقَد غَضِبَت جَهلاً سُلَيمٌ سَفاهَةً
وَطاشَتand acted rashly بِأَحلامٍwith minds كَثيرٍfrequent عُثورُهاtheir stumbling
وَطاشَت بِأَحلامٍ كَثيرٍ عُثورُها
Sulaym has indeed grown angry in ignorance and folly,
Sulaim in ignorance became angry, foolishly,
And acted rashly, with minds that often stumble.
And in her many unsteady dreams she raved;
لِئامٌbase مَساعيهاits endeavors كَذوبٌdeceitful حَديثُهاits speech
لِئامٌ مَساعيها كَذوبٌ حَديثُها
قَليلٌlittle غَناهاits help حينَwhen يُنعىis reported dead صُقورُهاits falcons
قَليلٌ غَناها حينَ يُنعى صُقورُها
Base are its endeavors; deceitful is its speech.
Vile are her efforts, false her talk,
Little is its help when its falcons' deaths are announced.
Feeble her pride when her hawks are named;
لَهاit has عَقلُintellect نِسوانٍwomen وَشَرُّand the worst شَريعَةٍcode of conduct
لَها عَقلُ نِسوانٍ وَشَرُّ شَريعَةٍ
نَزورٌscant نَداهاits bounty حينَwhen يُبغىis sought بُحورُهاits seas
نَزورٌ نَداها حينَ يُبغى بُحورُها
It has the intellect of women and the worst code of conduct.
She has a woman's mind, and the worst of laws,
Scant is its bounty when its seas are sought.
Base is her bellowing when her cattle are sought;
إِذاif ضِفتَهُمyou visited them as a guest أَلفَيتَyou found حَولَaround بُيوتِهِمtheir houses
إِذا ضِفتَهُم أَلفَيتَ حَولَ بُيوتِهِم
كِلاباًdogs لَهاthey have فيin الدارِthe dwelling عالٍloud هَريرُهاtheir growling
كِلاباً لَها في الدارِ عالٍ هَريرُها
If you visit them as a guest, you find around their houses
When visiting their dwellings you will find
Dogs whose growling is loud within the dwelling.
Dogs barking loudly round their houses.
