زادَت هُمومٌ فَماءُ العَينِ مُنحَدِرُ

زادَت هُمومٌ فَماءُ العَينِ مُنحَدِرُ

سَحّاً إِذا أَغرَقَتهُ عَبرَةٌ دِرَرُ

سَحّاً إِذا أَغرَقَتهُ عَبرَةٌ دِرَرُ

Sorrows have increased, so the eye's tears stream down,

Worries increased, so tears streamed down

In torrents, whenever a gushing tear floods it,

In torrents when sorrow let fall its pearls

وَجداً بِشَعثاءَ إِذ شَعثاءُ بَهكَنَةٌ

وَجداً بِشَعثاءَ إِذ شَعثاءُ بَهكَنَةٌ

هَيفاءُ لا دَنَسٌ فيها وَلا خَوَرُ

هَيفاءُ لا دَنَسٌ فيها وَلا خَوَرُ

In longing for Sha'tha, for Sha'tha is soft and full-bodied,

Passion with dishevelled hair, though dishevelled she was chaste

Slender-waisted, with neither stain nor weakness in her.

An unsullied, spotless, untouched girl

دَع عَنكَ شَعثاءَ إِذ كانَت مَوَدَّتُها

دَع عَنكَ شَعثاءَ إِذ كانَت مَوَدَّتُها

نَزراً وَشَرُّ وِصالِ الواصِلِ النَزِرُ

نَزراً وَشَرُّ وِصالِ الواصِلِ النَزِرُ

Put Sha'tha aside, since her affection was

Leave dishevelled one since her affection was

Scant; and the worst union a lover offers is a scant one.

But little, and how evil is the union of little

وَأتِ الرَسولَ فَقُل يا خَيرَ مُؤتَمَنٍ

وَأتِ الرَسولَ فَقُل يا خَيرَ مُؤتَمَنٍ

لِلمُؤمِنينَ إِذا ما عُدِّلَ البَشَرُ

لِلمُؤمِنينَ إِذا ما عُدِّلَ البَشَرُ

And go to the Messenger, then say: O best trustee

Come to the Messenger and say: O best trustee

For the believers, when humankind is fairly judged,

For the believers, when mankind is set right

عَلامَ تُدعى سُلَيمٌ وَهيَ نازِحَةٌ

عَلامَ تُدعى سُلَيمٌ وَهيَ نازِحَةٌ

أَمامَ قَومٍ هُمُ آوَوا وَهُم نَصَروا

أَمامَ قَومٍ هُمُ آوَوا وَهُم نَصَروا

Why is Sulaym summoned, though it is far away,

Why are you called Sulaym while you are departing

Ahead of a people who gave shelter and who gave aid?

Before a people who gave you refuge and support?

سَمّاهُمُ اللَهُ أَنصاراً لِنَصرِهِمِ

سَمّاهُمُ اللَهُ أَنصاراً لِنَصرِهِمِ

دينَ الهُدى وَعَوانُ الحَربِ تَستَعِرُ

دينَ الهُدى وَعَوانُ الحَربِ تَستَعِرُ

God named them Ansar for their support of

God named them Helpers for supporting

The faith of guidance, while renewed warfare blazes.

The religion of guidance. War's flames rage

وَجاهَدوا في سَبيلِ اللَهِ وَاِعتَرَفوا

وَجاهَدوا في سَبيلِ اللَهِ وَاِعتَرَفوا

لِلنائِباتِ فَما خاموا وَما ضَجِروا

لِلنائِباتِ فَما خاموا وَما ضَجِروا

And they strove in God's path and bore up

They struggled in God's path and confessed

Under calamities, so they neither flinched nor grew impatient.

To adversities, never tiring or bored

وَالناسُ أَلبٌ عَلَينا ثَمَّ لَيسَ لَنا

وَالناسُ أَلبٌ عَلَينا ثَمَّ لَيسَ لَنا

إِلّا السُيوفَ وَأَطرافَ القَنا وَزَرُ

إِلّا السُيوفَ وَأَطرافَ القَنا وَزَرُ

And the people are united against us; there we have no

People are hostile toward us, yet we have

Refuge but swords and the points of spears.

Only swords, spear-tips, and mail coats

نُجالِدُ الناسَ لا نُبقي عَلى أَحَدٍ

نُجالِدُ الناسَ لا نُبقي عَلى أَحَدٍ

وَلا نُضَيِّعُ ما توحي بِهِ السُوَرُ

وَلا نُضَيِّعُ ما توحي بِهِ السُوَرُ

We cross swords with the people, sparing no one,

We battle people, sparing no one,

And do not neglect what the surahs reveal.

Not neglecting what is revealed in surahs

وَلا يَهِرُّ جَنابَ الحَربِ مَجلِسُنا

وَلا يَهِرُّ جَنابَ الحَربِ مَجلِسُنا

وَنَحنُ حينَ تَلَظّى نارُها سُعُرُ

وَنَحنُ حينَ تَلَظّى نارُها سُعُرُ

Nor does our company loathe the field of war;

Nor does the heat of war make us neglect our sitting place

And when its fire blazes, we are its kindlers.

When its fire blazed.

وَكَم رَدَدنا بِبَدرٍ دونَ ما طَلَبوا

وَكَم رَدَدنا بِبَدرٍ دونَ ما طَلَبوا

أَهلَ النِفاقِ وَفينا أُنزِلَ الظَفَرُ

أَهلَ النِفاقِ وَفينا أُنزِلَ الظَفَرُ

And how often at Badr we drove back, denying them what they sought,

How we drove back at Badr what the hypocrites wanted,

The hypocrites; and victory was sent down among us.

And victory was sent down upon us

وَنَحنُ جُندُكَ يَومَ النَعفِ مِن أُحُدٍ

وَنَحنُ جُندُكَ يَومَ النَعفِ مِن أُحُدٍ

إِذ حَزَّبَت بَطَراً أَشياعَها مُضَرُ

إِذ حَزَّبَت بَطَراً أَشياعَها مُضَرُ

And we were your troops on the day at the slope of Uhud,

We are your soldiers on the day of Uhud's setback

When Mudar arrogantly mustered its partisans.

When Mudar's tribes routed us

فَما وَنينا وَما خِمنا وَما خَبَروا

فَما وَنينا وَما خِمنا وَما خَبَروا

مِنّا عِثاراً وَجُلُّ القَومِ قَد عَثَروا

مِنّا عِثاراً وَجُلُّ القَومِ قَد عَثَروا

So we neither flagged nor flinched, nor did they find

But we never lost heart or despaired,

Any stumble in us, though most of the people had stumbled.

And those people gained no advantage over us
