فَلاso may ... not زالَcease قَبرٌa grave بَينَbetween بُثنىButhna وَجِلَّقٍand Jillaq
عَلَيهِupon it مِنَof الوَسمِيِّthe season's first rains جَودٌcopious rain وَوابِلُand a heavy downpour
So may the grave between Buthna and Jillaq forever have
The grave still lies between Buṯnā and Jilqāq
copious showers and heavy downpours of the season's first rains upon it.
Upon it the generous clouds pour down their rain
وَأَنبَتَand may it grow حَوذاناًbuttercups وَعَوفاًand ‘awf, a fragrant plant مُنَوِّراًin bloom
I shall follow it with مِنsome of خَيرِthe best ماwhat أَناI قائِلُcan say
And may it grow buttercups and flowering ‘awf plants.
It has grown all around with bright flowers
I shall follow it with some of the finest words I can utter.
I will follow it with the best words I can attain
بَكىwept حارِثُHarith الجَولانِof the Golan مِنbecause of هُلكِthe death رَبِّهِof his lord
فَحَورانُso Hauran مِنهُbecause of it خاشِعٌhumbled مُتَضائِلُdiminished
Harith of the Golan wept at his lord's death;
Ḥāriṯ of Jawlān wept for the loss of his lord
so Hauran is humbled and diminished by it.
So Ḥawrān’s mountains are humbled and frail
وَماand not كانَwould have been بَينيbetween me لَوif لَقيتُكَI had met you سالِماًsafe and sound
وَبَينَand between الغِنىwealth إِلّاexcept لَيالٍnights قَلائِلُfew
And had I met you safe and sound, nothing would have stood between me
If I had met you unharmed, between us
and wealth but a few nights.
And wealth would have been only a few nights’ tale
