عَمراًʿAmr وَعَوفاًand ʿAwf إِذwhen تَجَهَّرَhe spoke aloud غادِياsetting out in the morning
Our father Mālik gave an injunction
Our father Malik enjoined
to ʿAmr and ʿAwf, as he spoke aloud, setting out in the morning:
Umar and Auf, as he moved away,
بِأَنto the effect that إِجعَلواmake أَموالَكُمyour wealth وَسُيوفَكُمand your swords
لِأَعراضِكُمfor your honor ماas long as سَلَّمَgrants safety اللَهُGod واقِياa safeguard
“Make your wealth and your swords
To make your wealth and your swords
a safeguard for your honor, as long as God grants safety.”
For your honor, so long as God saves the protector.
فَقُلناso we said لَهُto him إِذwhen قالَhe said ماwhat قالَhe said مَرحَباًgladly!
أَمَرتَyou enjoined بِمَعروفٍto do what is right وَأَوصَيتَand you gave counsel كافِياsufficiently
So we said to him, when he had said what he said: “Gladly!
So we said to him, when he said what he said, welcome!
You have enjoined what is right and given sufficient counsel.”
You have commanded good and sufficiently advised.
