لَقَدindeed عَظُمَتbecame grievous فيناamong us الرَزِيَّةُthe calamity إِنَّناindeed we
جِلادٌsteadfast عَلىin the face of رَيبِthe vicissitudes of الحَوادِثِevents وَالدَهرِand time
Our calamity is indeed grievous; truly we
Great indeed was the calamity that befell us
Are steadfast against the vicissitudes of events and time.
We were struck by the vicissitudes of fate and time
عَلىon الجِسرِthe bridge يَومَthe day of الجِسرِthe bridge لَهفيmy anguish عَلَيهِمfor them
فَياso, O لَهفَanguish of نَفسيmy soul لِلمُصابِfor the calamity عَلىon الجِسرِthe bridge
On the bridge, on the day of the bridge—my anguish for them!
Yearning for them on the bridge the day of the bridge
So, oh, my soul's anguish for the calamity on the bridge!
Oh how my soul yearns for the fallen on the bridge
يَقولُsay رِجالٌmen ماwhat لَحَسّانَwith Hassan باكِياًweeping
وَمالِيَand why should I لاnot أَبكيweep عَلىfor المَعشَرِthe company الزُهرِthe radiant
Men say, “Why is Hassan weeping?”
Men say why does Hassân weep
And why should I not weep for the radiant company?
Why should I not weep for the blossoms of youth
وَماand what لِيَis with me لاnot أَبكيI weep عَلىfor خَيرِthe finest of فِتيَةٍyoung men
بِباروشَماat Barushama أَضحَتcame to be دِماؤُهُمُtheir blood تَجريflowing
And why should I not weep for the finest young men?
Why should I not weep for the best of young men
At Barushama, their blood began to flow.
Whose blood flowed crimson at Baroshma
فَإِنّيfor indeed I لَباكٍsurely weeping ماas long as حَيِيتُI live وَلَوand if بَكىwept
عَلىfor المَيتِthe dead مَيتٌa dead man جُدتُI poured out generously بِالدَمعِwith tears فيin قَبريmy grave
For I shall surely weep as long as I live; and were
For I shall weep as long as I live
A dead man to weep for the dead, I would pour out tears in my grave.
If the dead weep for the dead, my tears at the grave would drown me
فَلَهفيso, my anguish عَلىfor الأَجلىthe bald-fronted one سَليطٍSalit وَرَهطِهِand his band
وَلَهفيand my anguish عَلىfor لَيثِthe lion of الغَريفِthe thicket أَبيfather of جَبرِJabr
So, my grief for bald-fronted Salit and his band,
I yearn for the finest Al-Sulayt and his comrades
And my grief for the lion of the thicket, Abu Jabr,
I yearn for the lion of Al-Gharif, Abi Jabir
وَأَشيَبَand a grey-haired man ثَوباهُhis two robes الوَقارُdignity وَناشِقٍand Nashiq
إِذاwhen اِنقَشَعَتcleared away عَنهُfrom him الضَبابَةُthe mist كَالبَدرِlike the full moon
And a grey-haired man whose two robes were dignity, and Nashiq,
His dignified attire turned white though youthful
Who, when the mist cleared from him, was like the full moon.
When the fog lifts from him he shines like the full moon
كَأَنَّas though سَليطاًSalit يَومَthe day شَدَّhe charged بِسَيفِهِwith his sword
وَأَلقىand cast aside القِناعَthe face-covering الحَرِثُal-Harith بنُson of أَبيfather of شِمرِShimr
It was as though Salit, the day he charged with his sword
As if Sulayt the day he drew his sword
And cast aside his face-covering, were al-Harith ibn Abi Shimr.
And Al-Harith ibn Abi Shimr cast off his mask

They were struck down while some of the month of fasting remained:
They were martyred in the month of fasting a remainder
Seven nights—that was the Night of Decree.
Of seven nights, that was the night of Al-Qadr
