بَنيO sons of أَسَدٍAsad ماwhat بالُis the matter with آلِthe family of خُوَيلِدٍKhuwailid
يَحِنّونَthey yearn شَوقاًwith longing كُلَّevery يَومٍday إِلىfor القِبطِthe Copts
O sons of Asad, what ails Khuwailid's family?
O sons of Asad, what is it with the clan of Khuwalid
They pine with longing every day for the Copts.
That they yearn every day for Egypt?
إِذاwhenever ذُكِرَتis mentioned قَهقاءُQahqa' حَنّواthey yearn لِذِكرِهاat its remembrance
وَلِلرَمَثِand for the raft المَقرونِlashed together وَالسَمَكِand the fish الرُقطِspeckled
Whenever Qahqa' is mentioned, they yearn at its memory,
If the deserts of Qahqa are mentioned they yearn at the mention
And for the lashed-together raft and the speckled fish.
And for salted fish and dried mullet
وَأَعيُنُهُمand their eyes مِثلُlike الزُجاجِglass وَصيغَةٌand a physical form
تُخالِفُdiffers from كَعباًKa'b فيin لَحىًbeards لَهُمُof theirs ثُطِّscanty
And their eyes are like glass, and their appearance
Their eyes are like glass, though their beards are a different shape
Differs from Ka'b's in their scanty beards.
You see the youth and elders among them
تَرىyou see ذاكَthat فيin الشُبّانِthe young men وَالمُردِand the beardless youths مِنهُمُamong them
مُبيناًplainly visible وَفيand in الأَطفالِthe children مِنهُمamong them وَفيand in الشُمطِthe grizzled men
You see that in their young men and beardless youths,
Clearly, and among their children, too, and their rabble
Plainly, and in their children and grizzled men.
By the life of Abu'l-‘Awwam, Khuwalid will strengthen the pact
لَعَمروُby the life of أَبيthe father of العَوّامِal-Awwam إِنَّindeed خُوَيلِداًKhuwailid
غَداةَon the morning تَبَنّاهُhe adopted him لَيوثِقُsurely makes binding فيin الشُرطِthe stipulations
By the life of al-Awwam's father, Khuwailid indeed
And if you, Jarir, attack me
Made the terms binding the morning he adopted him.
I will push you back, a slave to dishonor and abjection
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you إِنif تَجرُرyou bring عَلَيَّagainst me جَريرَةًan offense
رَدَدتُكَI will return you عَبداًa slave فيin المَهانَةِhumiliation وَالعَفطِand farting
And as for you, if you commit an offense against me,
I will make you a slave again, abased and farting.
