بَنيO sons of القَينِal-Qayn هَلّاwhy did you not إِذwhen فَخَرتُمyou boasted بِرَبعِكُمof your dwelling
بَني القَينِ هَلّا إِذ فَخَرتُم بِرَبعِكُم
فَخَرتُمyou boasted بِكيرٍof a forge عِندَat بابِthe door of اِبنِIbn (son of) جُندُعِJunduʿ
فَخَرتُم بِكيرٍ عِندَ بابِ اِبنِ جُندُعِ
O sons of al-Qayn, why, when you boasted of your dwelling,
O sons of Qain, when you boast of your quarter,
did you not boast of a forge at the door of Ibn Junduʿ?
Do you boast of a ruin at the door of the son of Jundu'?
بَناهُhe built it أَبوكُمyour father قَبلَbefore بِنيانِbuilding دارِهِhis house
بَناهُ أَبوكُم قَبلَ بِنيانِ دارِهِ
بِحَرسٍat Ḥars فَأَخفواso conceal ذِكرَthe mention of قَينٍa smith مُدَفَّعِspurned
بِحَرسٍ فَأَخفوا ذِكرَ قَينٍ مُدَفَّعِ
Your father built it before building his own house
Your father built it before his own house,
at Ḥars; so conceal the mention of a spurned smith.
With guards, so hide the mention of armed Qain!
وَأَلقواand cast away رَمَدَthe ashes of الكيرِthe forge يَعرِفُit recognizes وَسطَكُمyour midst
وَأَلقوا رَمَدَ الكيرِ يَعرِفُ وَسطَكُم
لَدىat مَجلِسٍa gathering مِنكُمof yours لَئيمٍignoble وَمَفجَعِand grievous
لَدى مَجلِسٍ مِنكُم لَئيمٍ وَمَفجَعِ
And cast away the forge’s ashes: they recognize your midst,
And cast the rubbish of the ruin, it will recognise your midst
at a gathering of yours, ignoble and grievous.
In an assembly of you, miserable and shocking!
