ياO حارِHar قَدindeed عَوَّلتَyou relied غَيرَother than مُعَوَّلٍa reliable support
عِندَat الهِياجِthe battle's tumult وَساعَةِand the hour of الأَحسابِancestral honor
O Hārith, you put your trust in what could not be trusted,
O Har, you have relied on what offers no support,
amid battle’s tumult, at the hour when honor is put to proof;
Amid battle's tumult and at the hour of ancestral honor,
إِذwhen تَمتَطيyou mount سُرُحَfree-striding اليَدَينِin the forelegs نَجيبَةًa noble she-camel
مَرَطىfleet الجِراءِin running خَفيفَةَlight الأَقرابِin the flanks
when you mounted a high-bred she-camel, free in both forelegs,
As you mount a noble she-camel with free-striding forelegs,
long-striding in her course, light about the flanks.
Fleet in her running, light of flank.
وَالقَومُand the men خَلفَكَbehind you قَدalready تَرَكتَyou abandoned قِتالَهُمtheir fight

The warriors were behind you: you had abandoned the fight against them,
And the men are behind you; you have abandoned their fight,
hoping for escape—but it was no time for flight.
Hoping to escape, though this is no time to flee.
هَلّاwhy did you not عَطَفتَyou turned back عَلىtoward اِبنِthe son of أُمِّكَyour mother إِذwhen ثَوىhe lay fallen

قَعصَslain outright by الأَسِنَّةِthe spearpoints ضائِعَbereft of الأَسلابِbattle-gear
Why did you not turn back to your brother when he lay fallen,
Why did you not turn back to your mother's son when he lay fallen,
beaten down by spearpoints, his armor abandoned as spoil?
Slain outright by spearpoints, his battle-gear lost—
جَهماًJahm لَعَمرُكَby your life لَوif دُهيتَyou were struck by calamity بِمِثلِهاby its like
لَأَتاكَhe would surely have come to you أَخثَمُa broad-muzzled lion شابِكُinterlocking الأَنيابِin the fangs
A formidable, grim-faced man—by your life! Had the like befallen you,
Jahm—by your life, had such a calamity struck you,
he would surely have come to you, flat-snouted, with interlocking fangs.
He would surely have come to you, a broad-muzzled lion with interlocking fangs.
عَجِلَacted swiftly المَليكُthe Sovereign لَهُfor him فَأَهلَكَand so destroyed جَمعَهُhis host

The Sovereign hastened against him and destroyed his host
The Sovereign dealt swiftly with him and destroyed his host,
with humiliating disgrace and grievous torment.
With the disgrace of a humiliating calamity and grievous torment.
لَوif كُنتَyou were ضِنءَthe offspring of كَريمَةٍa noblewoman أَبلَيتَهاyou would have shown her
حُسنىa kindness وَلَكِنand yet ضِنءَthe offspring of بِنتِthe daughter of عُقابِan eagle
Had you been the offspring of a noble woman, you would have honored her
Had you been a noblewoman's offspring, you would have shown her
with noble service; but you are the offspring of an eagle’s daughter.
Kindness; but you are the offspring of an eagle's daughter.
