My young she-camel shied from the stones of a lava field,

Built over an open-handed, lavish giver.

Do not shy from him, O she-camel, for he is

A deep drinker of wine, a kindler of wars.

May Rabiʿah ibn Mukaddam never be far away,

And may the morning rainclouds water his grave with a brimming bucket.

Were it not for travel and the distance across a vast, trackless waste,

I would have left her crawling on her hock.

The horsemen fled from Rabiʿah after

He had rescued them from the depths of distress.

    فَلَقَد دَعَوتَ هُناكَ غَيرَ مُجيبِ

    He calls on Ali when his back is left unguarded;

So indeed, there you called on one who would not answer.

A fine young man, whose saddle Nubayshah carried,

On the day of al-Kudayd—Nubayshah ibn Habib.
