لاnot تَعدَمَنever lack رَجُلاًa man أَحَلَّكَlodged you بُغضُهُhatred of him
لا تَعدَمَن رَجُلاً أَحَلَّكَ بُغضُهُ
نَجرانَNajran فيin عَيشٍa life أَحَذَّmeager لَئيمِignoble
نَجرانَ في عَيشٍ أَحَذَّ لَئيمِ
May you never lack a man—hatred of him has lodged you
Do not deprive a man whose hatred has made you
in Najran, in a meager, ignoble life.
Live miserably like a mean coward.
بُلِيَتwas tested قَناتُكَyour spearshaft فيin الحُروبِthe wars فَأُلفِيَتand so was found
بُلِيَت قَناتُكَ في الحُروبِ فَأُلفِيَت
خَمّانَةًa flimsy stick جَوفاءَhollow ذاتَpossessing وُصومِcracks
خَمّانَةً جَوفاءَ ذاتَ وُصومِ
Your spearshaft was tested in the wars and was found
Your canal was tested in wars, so it became
a flimsy, hollow stick, full of cracks.
Empty and hollow with fasting and asceticism.
غَضَبُwrath الإِلَهِGod عَلىupon الزَبَعرىal-Zabaʿrā وَاِبنِهِand his son
غَضَبُ الإِلَهِ عَلى الزَبَعرى وَاِبنِهِ
وَعَذابُand torment سوءٍevil فيin الحَياةِlife مُقيمِabiding
وَعَذابُ سوءٍ في الحَياةِ مُقيمِ
May God's wrath be upon al-Zabaʿrā and his son,
God was angry with Zabra and his son
and grievous torment abide throughout life.
And a lasting torment in life remains.
