أَلاListen! أَبلِغtell أَباAbu (father of) مَخزومَMakhzum عَنّيon my behalf
وَبَعضُand some القَولِspeech لَيسَis not بِذيpossessed of حَويلِfalsehood
Listen, tell Abu Makhzum on my behalf—
Deliver thou my message unto Abu Makhzum
And some speech contains no falsehood.
And beware! for every word is not without avail,
أَماindeed وَأَبيكَby your father لَوif لَبَّثتَyou had lingered شَيئاًa little
لَأَلحَقَكَwould certainly have made you join الفَوارِسُthe horsemen بِالجَليلِto al-Jalil
Indeed, by your father, had you lingered a little,
But for thy father's sake! divulge not aught!
The horsemen would have made you join al-Jalil.
Lest unto thee the horsemen give battle in the vale,
وَلَكِنand yet قَدindeed بَكيتَyou have wept وَأَنتَwhile you خِلوٌuninvolved
بَعيدُdistant الدارِin dwelling مِنfrom عَونِaiding القَتيلِthe slain man
But you have wept while you were uninvolved,
Alone thou'st wept, so far from friend or brother,
In a distant dwelling, far from aiding the slain man.
While ruins mock thee in thy friendless bale,
وَهَلand does يُغنيavail التَلَهُّفُanguished regret عَنكَfor you شَيئاًanything
وَهَلand does يُجديbenefit التَلَهُّفُanguished regret عَنon behalf of قَتيلِa slain man
And does anguished regret avail you anything?
Can yearning aught avail thee? Save thee, brother?
And does anguished regret avail a slain man?
Or ward the Necromancer's venom'd bale?
