تَمَنّىwished جُبَيرٌJubayr أَنto يَسودَbecome chief كَماjust as رَجاhoped
رُجوعَthe return of الشَبابِyouth ذاهِبُbereft of العَقلِreason مُثكَلُbereaved of a child
Jubayr wished to be chief, just as one hoped
for youth's return—a man bereft of reason and bereaved of a child.
وَمِنand from قَبلِهِbefore him أَعياproved too difficult for أَباهُhis father فَلَمso did not يَزَلcease
بِهِin him التيهُconceit حَتّىuntil ماتَhe died وَهوَwhile he مُعَيَّلُimpoverished
And before him, it had eluded his father, who remained
in his conceit until he died impoverished.
فَدَعso leave عَنكَaway from you مَسعاةَthe striving of الكِرامِthe noblemen فَإِنماfor only
أَبوكَyour father عَدِيٌّAdi فَأتَمِرso deliberate كَيفَhow تَفعَلُyou will act
So leave the noblemen's pursuits alone, for
your father is merely Adi; so consider how you will act.
وَلاand do not تَتَمَنَّwish for ياO جُبَيرُJubayr مَساعِيَendeavors of الthe
كِرامِnoblemen وَلَمand did not تَمهَدestablish لَكَfor you العِزَّhonor نَوفَلُNawfal
And do not, Jubayr, aspire to the endeavors of the
noblemen, when Nawfal has not established honor for you.
وَأَنتَand you لِحَصّاءِof a hairless woman القَفاthe nape مارِنِيَّةٍMarini
وَماand not لَكَfor you فيin المَجدِglory المُقَدَّمِpreeminent أَوَّلُa forebear
And you are born of a bald-naped Marini woman,
and have no forebear in preeminent glory.
فَقَدfor indeed فاتَoutstripped بِالمَجدِin glory التَليدِancestral أَباكُمُyour father
أَبوfather of المِسوَرِal-Miswar الحاميthe protector وَمَجدُكَand your glory أَسفَلُlower
For your father has been outstripped in ancestral glory by
Abu al-Miswar, the protector, and your glory is lower.
