Jasim has been effaced as far as Bayt Ras,

then al-Jawabi, then the side of the Golan,

then Jasim’s protected pasture, then the buildings of al-Suffar,

an abode of cavalry bands and purebred camels,

then the hamlets of Bilas, then Darayya,

then Sakka, then the nearby palaces.

Easter has drawn near, and the maidservants are stringing

    garlands of coral in haste.

They vie with one another in supplication to God,

and all supplication is for Satan.

That was an abode for the house of Jafna in the monastery,

and the changing of the ages is inevitable.

The prayers to Christ in that monastery

are the supplications of the priest and the monks.

Indeed, I see myself there, truly a man of standing,

beside the crowned one—my seat and my place.
