إِنَّindeed الَّتيshe who أَلقَتكَcast you مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath رِجلِهاher leg
وَليدُO Walīd لِمِجهالُtruly reckless العَشِيِّat dusk خَبوبُdeceitful
Indeed, she who cast you from beneath her leg,
She who cast you from beneath her feet
Is, Walīd, truly reckless at dusk and deceitful,
Is a child born to obscure night's ignorance
لَيالِيَduring the nights يُدعىhe is called دَيسَماًDaysam بِاِبنِas son of صَقعَبٍṢaqʿab
لِماat whatever ضَمَّgripped زَوجُthe pair of الكَلبَتَينِthe tongs ضَروبُa frequent striker
In the nights when he was called Daysam, son of Ṣaqʿab,
Nights called Daisam, the son of Saq'ab
One who kept striking whatever the pair of tongs gripped.
When the husband of two bitches collected scraps
فَماso not لَكَfor you مِنfrom كَعبٍKaʿb حَصاةٌa pebble تَعُدُّهاyou count it
وَإِنand if قُلتَyou say مِنfrom شِجعٍShijʿ فَأَنتَthen you are كَذوبُan inveterate liar
So you have no pebble from Kaʿb to count,
So you have no glorious ancestry to count
And if you say you are from Shijʿ, then you are an inveterate liar.
And if you claim to be from Shija', you are a liar
وَلَكِنَّand yet قَيناًa smith حَمَّمَblackened with soot الكيرُthe bellows أَنفَهُhis nose
لَئيمُignoble المُحَيّاthe countenance لِلِئامِof the ignoble رَبيبُa fosterling
But rather a smith whose nose the bellows blackened—
But you are a slave who carried the pot, nose dripping
Ignoble of face, a fosterling of the ignoble.
A vile flatterer of vile patrons, a minion
إِذاwhen حُصِّلَتis examined كَعبٌKaʿb نَمواthey trace their descent لِأَبيهِمto their father
فَطابواso they became pure وَإِنand if تُنسَبyour descent is traced فَثَمَّthen there تَخيبُyou fail
When Kaʿb’s lineage is examined, they trace their descent to their father,
When ancestry is verified, they prosper
So they prove pure; and if your descent is traced, there you fail.
And if you claim it falsely, you are disgraced
فَماso not لَكَfor you فيat الرُكنَينِthe two corners حَقُّa right حِجابَةٍcustodianship
وَلاand not لَكَfor you فيin صِهرِkinship by marriage النَبِيِّthe Prophet نَصيبُa share
So you have no right of custodianship at the two corners,
You have no right to guardianship at the Rukni
Nor have you any share in kinship by marriage with the Prophet.
Nor any share in the Prophet's kinship
