لَقَدindeed وَرِثَinherited الضَلالَةَmisguidance عَنfrom أَبيهِhis father
لَقَد وَرِثَ الضَلالَةَ عَن أَبيهِ
أُبَيٌّUbayy يَومَthe day فارَقَهُhe parted from him الرَسولُthe Messenger
أُبَيٌّ يَومَ فارَقَهُ الرَسولُ
Indeed, misguidance was inherited from his father
He inherited misguidance from his father
by Ubayy, the day the Messenger parted from him.
A stubborn man, the day the Messenger left him
أَجِئتَdid you come to مُحَمَّداًMuhammad عَظماًa bone رَميماًdecayed
أَجِئتَ مُحَمَّداً عَظماً رَميماً
لِتُكذِبَهُto call him a liar وَأَنتَand you بِهِof him جَهولُutterly ignorant
لِتُكذِبَهُ وَأَنتَ بِهِ جَهولُ
Did you come to Muhammad with a decayed bone
You came to the eminent and noble Muhammad
to call him a liar, though you are utterly ignorant of him?
To deny him, while being ignorant of him
وَقَدand indeed نالَتstruck بَنوthe sons of النَجّارِal-Najjar مِنكُمfrom among you
وَقَد نالَت بَنو النَجّارِ مِنكُم
أُمَيَّةَUmayyah إِذwhen يَغَوِّثُhe cries for help ياO عَقيلُAqil
أُمَيَّةَ إِذ يَغَوِّثُ يا عَقيلُ
And Banu al-Najjar struck one of your number—
And the sons of Najjar have already gained from you
Umayyah, as he cried for help, O Aqil.
Umayya, when he cries "O Aqil, help!"
وَتَبَّand perished اِبناthe two sons of رَبيعَةَRabi'ah إِذwhen أَطاعاthey both obeyed
وَتَبَّ اِبنا رَبيعَةَ إِذ أَطاعا
أَباAbu (father of) جَهلٍJahl (ignorance) لِأُمِّهِماfor their mother الهُبولُbereavement
أَبا جَهلٍ لِأُمِّهِما الهُبولُ
And the two sons of Rabi'ah perished when they obeyed
And the two sons of Rabee'ah repented when they obeyed
Abu Jahl—bereavement be their mother's lot!
Abu Jahl, for the sake of their vulgar mother
وَأَفلَتَand escaped حارِثٌHarith لِماbecause شُغِلناwe were occupied
وَأَفلَتَ حارِثٌ لِما شُغِلنا
بِأَسرِwith capturing القَومِthe people أُسرَتِهِhis clan قَليلُfew
بِأَسرِ القَومِ أُسرَتِهِ قَليلُ
And Harith escaped, since we were occupied
And Harith escaped when we were busy
with taking the people captive; his clan was small.
With capturing the hostages of his people, few
