Indeed, I have sworn an oath that is not false:

    Had al-Harith al-Jafni had companions

from Ghassan's stock, their sword-belts hanging loose,

not cheated out of goats in their absence,

nor driven away with reddened eyes

when the nobleman's gate was approached—

whenever they came, wine was mixed for them,

and goblets and cups were carried round among them—

then they would all have returned, or would have had

captives from the foe, or slain men and spoils.

They would have fought where death overtook them,

until they returned with captives and spoils.

But he faced the foe with only a motley rabble,

who have no ancestral honor when death comes in earnest.
