If you see two shepherds among sheep,
If you see two shepherds with a flock,
two little dark-skinned men swearing by Nuhum,
Both swearing solemnly about their share,

between them pieces of meat shared out,
Between them are the remnants of carved meat,
from the valley floor of ‘Amq, with its jalil grass and salam acacias,
From the belly of a deep valley of sublime glory,

then go away, and let no craving for meat seize you.
Then walk away, let not the meat make you covet.
