آلَيتُI swore جميعِall النّاسِthe people مجْتهِداًstriving earnestly
مِنّيfrom me أَلِيَّةَan oath بَرٍّan upright man غَيرِwithout إِفنادِfalsehood
I swore among all people, striving earnestly,
I exerted myself to be kind to all people,
An upright man's oath from me, free of falsehood:
From me, kindness without limit.
تَاللَهِby God ماnot حَمَلَتhas carried in her womb أُنثىa female وَلاnor وَضَعَتhas given birth
مِثلَlike النَبِيِّthe Prophet رَسولِthe Messenger الرَحمَةِmercy الهاديthe guide
By God, no woman has carried or borne
By Allah, no female has carried or given birth
Anyone like the Prophet, the guiding Messenger of mercy.
To the like of the Prophet, the messenger of mercy and guidance.
وَلاand not بَراcreated اللهGod خلْقاًa being مِنْamong بَريّتِهِHis creation
أَوفىmore faithful بِذِمَّةِto the protection of جارٍa neighbor أَوor بِميعادِto a promise
Nor has God created any being among His creation
Nor has Allah created among his creation
More faithful to a neighbor's protection or to a promise
One more true to the covenant of a neighbor or an appointment.
مِنَthan الَّذيthe one who كانَwas نوراًa light يُستَضاءُillumination is sought بِهِby him
مَبارَكَblessed الأَمرِin his affairs ذاendowed with حَزمٍresolve وَإِرشادِand guidance
Than he who was a light by which illumination was sought,
Than he who was a light by which
Blessed in his affairs, endowed with resolve and guidance,
Blessed affairs, resolute and guiding, were illuminated.
مُصَدِّقاًaffirming the truth لِلنَبِيِّينَof the prophets الأُلىwho سَلَفواhad gone before
وَأَبذَلَand the most generous الناسِof people لِلمَعروفِin kindness لِلجاديto the supplicant
Affirming the truth of the prophets who had gone before,
Confirming the prophets who passed before,
And the most generous of people in kindness to the supplicant.
And who was most generous of people in benevolence to the needy.
خَيرَO best البَرِيَّةِof creation إِنّيindeed I كُنتُwas فيin نَهَرٍa river
جارٍflowing فَأَصبَحتُthen I became مِثلَlike المُفرَدِthe solitary one الصاديthe thirsty one
O best of creation, I was indeed in a river,
The best of creations - I was a close companion
Flowing; then I became like a solitary, thirsty man.
Then I became like one solitary and calling aloud.
أَمسىcame to be نِساؤُكَyour wives عَطَّلنَthey left bare البُيوتَthe houses فَماand so no longer
يَضرِبنَthey hammer فَوقَabove قَفاthe back of سِترٍa curtain بِأَوتادِwith pegs
Your wives have now left the houses bare, and no longer
Your wives have neglected their homes, so they
Hammer in pegs above the back of a curtain.
Do not strike above the neck's nape with a veil.
مِثلَlike الرَواهِبِthe nuns يَلبَسنَthey wear المُسوحَsackcloth garments وَقَدand indeed
أَيقَنَّthey became certain بِالبُؤسِof misery بَعدَafter النِعمَةِprosperity الباديapparent
Like nuns, they wear sackcloth, and have indeed
Like nuns they don cloaks, yet they
Become certain of the misery apparent after prosperity.
Are certain of misery after comfort has perished.
