فَرَّhe fled وَأَلقىand flung لَناto us رُمحَهُhis spear
لَعَلَّكَperhaps you عِكرِمَIkrima لَمdid not تَفعَلِyou do
He fled and flung his spear to us.
He fled and threw down his spear to us
Perhaps, Ikrima, you did not do so.
Perhaps you, O Akrima, did not act thus!
وَوَلَّيتَand you turned away تَعدوyou run كَعَدوِlike the running of الظَليمِthe male ostrich
ماnot إِنat all (emphasis) تَجورُyou stray عَنِfrom المَعدِلِthe path
And you turned away, running like a male ostrich,
You turned and fled like the flight of the unarmed
not straying at all from the path.
Never swerving from the right course
وَلَمand did not تُلقِyou turn ظَهرَكَyour back مُستَأنِساًat ease
كَأَنَّas though قَفاكَyour nape قَفاthe nape of فُرعُلِa hyena cub
Nor did you turn your back at ease,
Nor offering your back as though secure
as though your nape were a hyena cub’s nape.
As though your shoulders were the shoulders of Furay'ul!
