ثَوىhe dwelt بِمَكَّةَin Mecca بِضعَa few عَشرَةَten حِجَّةًyears
يُذَكِّرُhe exhorts لَوif only يَلقىhe might find خَليلاًa friend مُؤاتِياsupportive
He dwelt in Mecca for ten-odd years,
He settled in Mecca for a dozen pilgrimages
Exhorting, hoping to find a supportive friend.
Reminding, were he to meet a generous friend
وَيَعرِضُand he presents فيamong أَهلِthe people of المَواسِمِthe pilgrimage gatherings نَفسَهُhimself
فَلَمbut did not يَرَfind مَنanyone who يُؤوِيprovides shelter وَلَمand did not يَرَfind داعِياsomeone who invites
And he presented himself among those at the pilgrimage gatherings,
And displaying himself before the crowds
But found no one to shelter him, nor anyone to invite him.
But found none to shelter nor anyone calling
فَلَمّاthen when أَتاناhe came to us وَاِطمَأَنَّتand settled بِهِwith him النَوىdistance from home
فَأَصبَحَthen he became مَسروراًjoyful بِطَيبَةَin Taybah راضِياcontent
Then, when he came to us and his wanderings came to rest,
When he came to us and settled happily
He became joyful and content in Taybah.
He awoke content in the goodness of Taybah
وَأَصبَحَand he became لاnot يَخشىhe fears عَداوَةَthe enmity of ظالِمٍan oppressor
قَريبٍnearby وَلاand not يَخشىhe fears مِنَamong الناسِthe people باغِياan aggressor
And he no longer feared the enmity of an oppressor
And awoke fearing no unjust enemy
Close at hand, nor feared any aggressor among the people.
Neither kin nor the people's rebellion
بَذَلناwe gave freely لَهُto him الأَموالَwealth مِنfrom جُلِّthe greater part of مالِناour wealth
وَأَنفُسَناand our lives عِندَat الوَغىbattle وَالتَآسِياand mutual support
We offered him wealth from the greater part of our possessions,
We gave him our wealth from the best of our riches
And our lives in battle, and mutual support.
And ourselves in turmoil and discord
نُحارِبُwe fight مَنwhoever عادىshowed enmity مِنَamong الناسِthe people كُلَّهِمall of them
جَمعاًall together وَإِنand even if كانَhe were الحَبيبُthe beloved المُصافِياthe loyal friend
We fight whoever among all people is hostile to him,
We battle all who oppose the people
One and all, even if he were a beloved, loyal friend.
Together, even if the beloved purifies
وَنَعلَمُand we know أَنَّthat اللَهَGod لاno رَبَّlord غَيرُهُother than Him
وَأَنَّand that كِتابَthe Book of اللَهِGod أَصبَحَhas become هادِياa guide
And we know that God alone is Lord,
And we know that there is no Lord but Allah
And that God's Book has become a guide.
And that Allah's book has become our guide
