أَتَرَكتُمُhave you abandoned غَزوَraiding الدُروبِthe passes وَجِئتُمand you have come
أَتَرَكتُمُ غَزوَ الدُروبِ وَجِئتُم
لِقِتالِto fight قَومٍa people عِندَbeside قَبرِthe grave of مُحَمَّدِMuhammad
لِقِتالِ قَومٍ عِندَ قَبرِ مُحَمَّدِ
Have you abandoned raiding the passes and come
Have you left invading the roads and come
to fight a people beside Muhammad's grave?
To fight people at Muhammad's grave?
فَلَبِئسَso wretched indeed is هَديُthe way of الصالِحينَthe righteous هُديتُمُyou were guided
فَلَبِئسَ هَديُ الصالِحينَ هُديتُمُ
وَلَبِئسَand wretched indeed is فِعلُthe deed of الجاهِلِthe ignorant man المُتَعَمِّدِacting deliberately
وَلَبِئسَ فِعلُ الجاهِلِ المُتَعَمِّدِ
So wretched is the way of the righteous along which you have been guided,
How evil the guidance you have been guided by,
and wretched is the deed of the ignorant man acting deliberately.
How foul the deed of the willful ignoramus!
إِنif تُقبِلواyou advance نَجعَلwe shall make قِرىhospitality for سَرَواتِكُمyour chieftains
إِن تُقبِلوا نَجعَل قِرى سَرَواتِكُم
حَولَaround المَدينَةِMedina كُلَّevery لَدنٍsupple مِذوَدِrepelling spear
حَولَ المَدينَةِ كُلَّ لَدنٍ مِذوَدِ
If you advance, we shall make your chieftains' welcome
If you come in peace, we will make the outskirts of your encampments
every supple, repelling spear around Medina.
Surround the city, near and far.
أَوor تُدبِرواyou retreat فَلَبِئسَthen wretched indeed is ماwhat سَافَرتُمُyou journeyed
أَو تُدبِروا فَلَبِئسَ ما سَافَرتُمُ
وَلَمِثلُand indeed, the like of أَمرِthe conduct of إِمامِكُمyour leader لَمdid not يَهتَدِfollow the right path
وَلَمِثلُ أَمرِ إِمامِكُم لَم يَهتَدِ
Or if you retreat, how wretched was your journey,
Or if you turn away, how evil your journey has been!
and indeed, conduct like your leader's followed no right path.
Never has any leader fared as badly as yours.
وَكَأَنَّand as though أَصحابَthe companions of النَبِيِّthe Prophet عَشِيَّةًone evening
وَكَأَنَّ أَصحابَ النَبِيِّ عَشِيَّةً
بُدنٌsacrificial camels تُنَحَّرُbeing slaughtered عِندَat بابِthe door of المَسجِدِthe mosque
بُدنٌ تُنَحَّرُ عِندَ بابِ المَسجِدِ
And it was as though the Prophet's companions, one evening,
It was as though the Prophet's companions were
were sacrificial camels being slaughtered at the mosque's door.
Bodies being slaughtered at the mosque's gate.
فَاِبكِso weep أَباAbu (father of) عَمروٍAmr لِحُسنِfor the excellence of بَلائِهِhis service
فَاِبكِ أَبا عَمروٍ لِحُسنِ بَلائِهِ
أَمسىhe has become مُقيماًdwelling فيin بَقيعِBaqi الغَرقَدِal-Gharqad (boxthorn)
أَمسى مُقيماً في بَقيعِ الغَرقَدِ
So weep for Abu Amr, for his noble service;
Weep for Abu Amr amid his fine affliction,
he has come to dwell in Baqi al-Gharqad.
Who dwelled last evening in Al-Baqi's flooded ground.
