لَوif كانَthere were فيin الدارِthe house قَرمٌa noble chief ذوpossessing مُحافَظَةٍprotective vigilance
حاميdefender of الحَقيقَةِwhat must be protected ماضٍresolute خالُهُhis maternal uncle أَنَسُAnas
Had there been in the house a noble chief, steadfast in his duty,
If only there were in the house a respected elder
a resolute defender of honor, whose maternal uncle was Anas,
Guardian of truth, whose company would bring comfort
إِذاًthen حَلَلتَyou lodged خُبَيبٌKhubayb مَنزِلاًa dwelling فُسِحاًspacious
وَلَمand not يُشَدَّbe fastened عَلَيكَupon you الكَبلُthe fetter وَالحَرَسُand the guards
then, Khubayb, you would have lodged in a spacious dwelling,
Then you would have dwelled, my dear, in a spacious abode
and neither the fetter nor the guards would have held you fast.
And not been shackled by chains and guards
وَلَمand not يَسُقكَdrive you إِلىto التَنعيمِal-Tanʿīm زِعنِفَةٌa rabble
مِنَfrom المَعاشِرِthe clans مِمَّنfrom those whom قَدalready نَفَتcast out عُدُسُʿUdus
Nor would a rabble have driven you to al-Tanʿīm,
And not been led to bliss by the rude hands
from the clans, among those whom ʿUdus had cast out.
Of those whose friendship has vanished like mirage
صَبراًbe patient خُبَيبُKhubayb فَإِنَّfor indeed القَتلَbeing slain مَكرُمَةٌan honor
إِلىto جِنانِgardens نَعيمٍbliss يَرجُعُreturns النَفَسُthe life-breath
Be patient, Khubayb, for being slain is an honor;
Have patience, my dear, for death by treachery
to gardens of bliss the breath of life returns.
Is but a passage to the Gardens of Heavenly bliss
دَلّوكَthey led you غَدراًtreacherously وَهُمand they فيهاin it أُلوpossessors of خُلُفٍbroken promises
وَأَنتَand you ضَيمٌoppression لَهاfor it فيin الدارِthe house مُحتَبَسُheld captive
They led you treacherously, and in this they were breakers of promises,
They lured you by deceit, themselves steeped in dishonor
while you, wronged, were held captive for them in the house.
While you are wronged, imprisoned in this house
