    Indeed, the ears of Kaʿb and ʿĀmir have been lopped off,

    By the slaying of Ibn ʿAbd; then their noses fell.

    So they fled, their ram gored, and their hosts

    In bands and scattered groups, their ranks not re-formed.

    كَذاكَ المَنايا حَينُها وَحُتوفُها

    And Ibn ʿAbd met his doom when he fell among our spears;

    Such are the fates—their ruin and their dooms.

    Fihr was stricken by his loss; may they never recover from

    Calamities whose heat and biting chill are plain.

    And thereafter, there will never cease to fall among them

    Crushing blows of humiliation, whose vicissitudes cannot be averted.

    فَلَم تُغنِ عَنها نَبلُها وَسُيوفُها

    And another at Badr, where their hope was dashed;

    So their arrows and their swords availed them nothing.

    يُصِمُّ المُنادي جَرسُها وَحَفيفُها

    And another soon, from which there is no escape;

    Its clangor and rustling deafen the herald.
