جَمَحَت بَنو جَمحٍ لِشِقوَةِ جَدِّهِم

جَمَحَت بَنو جَمحٍ لِشِقوَةِ جَدِّهِم

إِنَّ الذَليلَ مُوَكَّلٌ بِذَليلِ

إِنَّ الذَليلَ مُوَكَّلٌ بِذَليلِ

Banū Jumaḥ ran wild through the wretchedness of their two forefathers;

The sons of Jumah ran wild because of their ill fortune.

indeed, one base wretch is ever entrusted to another.

Indeed, the abject man is bound to another abject man.

قُتِلَت بَنو جَمحٍ بِبَدرٍ عَنوَةً

قُتِلَت بَنو جَمحٍ بِبَدرٍ عَنوَةً

وَتَخاذَلوا سَعياً بِكُلِّ سَبيلِ

وَتَخاذَلوا سَعياً بِكُلِّ سَبيلِ

Banū Jumaḥ were slain at Badr by force,

The sons of Jumah were slain at Badr by force.

and failed one another, hastening down every road.

And they deserted one another, hastening along every path.

جَحَدوا القُرانَ وَكَذَّبوا بِمُحَمَّدٍ

جَحَدوا القُرانَ وَكَذَّبوا بِمُحَمَّدٍ

وَاللَهُ يُظهِرُ أَمرَ كُلِّ رَسولِ

وَاللَهُ يُظهِرُ أَمرَ كُلِّ رَسولِ

They denied the Qur’an and declared Muhammad a liar,

They denied the Qur’an and disbelieved in Muhammad.

yet God makes every messenger’s cause prevail.

And God makes the cause of every messenger prevail.

فَلَحا الإِلَهُ أَبا خُزَيمَةَ وَاِبنَهُ

فَلَحا الإِلَهُ أَبا خُزَيمَةَ وَاِبنَهُ

وَالخالِدينَ وَصاعِدَ بنَ عَقيلِ

وَالخالِدينَ وَصاعِدَ بنَ عَقيلِ

So may God curse Abū Khuzaymah and his son,

So may God curse Abu Khuzaymah and his son,

the two Khālids, and Ṣāʿid ibn ʿAqīl.

and the Khalids, and Ṣāʿid son of ʿAqīl.

تَرَكوا الحُجونَ وَمَن يُقاتِلُ دونَهُم

تَرَكوا الحُجونَ وَمَن يُقاتِلُ دونَهُم

وَتَخاذَلوا لُؤماً فَشَرُّ قَبيلِ

وَتَخاذَلوا لُؤماً فَشَرُّ قَبيلِ

They abandoned al-Ḥajūn and those who fought in their defense,

They abandoned al-Hujun and whoever fights in their defense.

and failed one another out of baseness—what a vile tribe!

And they deserted one another out of baseness—so they are the worst tribe.
