We are no drinking band sheltered beneath a cloak,

preparing a he-goat and a lancet for the tavern.

Kings and sons of kings, when they grow tipsy,

lavish morning wine and rich camel-hump fat.

When they sit, you find the sweat upon their skins

like a spilled bowlful of musk and saffron.

You see, strewn over the folds of the carpets,

sandals, fine robes, and striped wraps.

    وَإِن تَأتِهِم تَحمَد نِدامَهُمُ غَدا

    And you would think they had died in Halimah’s day;

yet if you visit them, tomorrow you will praise their drinking company.

And one wearing earrings hurries, pressing his cheek

against brocade whose edging has been torn to shreds.
