وَنُبِّئتُand I was told أَنَّthat أَباAbu (father of) مُنذِرٍMundhir
وَنُبِّئتُ أَنَّ أَبا مُنذِرٍ
يُساميكَrivals you لِلحَدَثِfor the crisis الأَكبَرِthe gravest
يُساميكَ لِلحَدَثِ الأَكبَرِ
And I was told that Abu Mundhir
rivals you in the gravest crisis.
قَذالُكَthe back of your head أَحسَنُfairer مِنthan وَجهِهِhis face
قَذالُكَ أَحسَنُ مِن وَجهِهِ
وَأُمُّكَand your mother خَيرٌbetter مِنَthan المُنذِرِal-Mundhir
وَأُمُّكَ خَيرٌ مِنَ المُنذِرِ
The back of your head is fairer than his face,
and your mother is better than al-Mundhir.
وَيُسرىand the left of يَدَيكَyour two hands إِذاwhen أَعسَرَتit is hard-pressed
وَيُسرى يَدَيكَ إِذا أَعسَرَت
كَيُمنىlike the right of يَدَيهِhis two hands فَلاso do not تَمتَريdoubt
كَيُمنى يَدَيهِ فَلا تَمتَري
And your left hand, when hard-pressed,
is like his right hand—so do not doubt.
وَشَتّانَand vast is the difference بَينَكُماbetween you two فيin النَدىgenerosity
وَشَتّانَ بَينَكُما في النَدى
وَفيand in البَأسِvalor وَالخُبرِand experience وَالمَنظَرِand appearance
وَفي البَأسِ وَالخُبرِ وَالمَنظَرِ
And vast is the difference between you two in generosity,
and in valor, experience, and appearance.
