Did it please the foundling woman's sons that we

were at peace on the morning of al-Miqdād's horsemen?

We were eight, while they were a great host,

clamorous; yet spears drove them off in all directions.

But for what they had suffered, which also hurt their hoof-frogs

south of Sāya yesterday through being led—

their heels were worn down and their backs wasted

by a day of being led and a day of pursuit—

they would surely have met you, bearing every fully armed warrior,

a guardian of honor, noble in ancestry.

We were among the unhurried men close behind you,

when you cast loose the reins of every steed.

No! By the Lord of the dancing she-camels going to Minā,

and of those crossing the passes of towering mountains,

until we make the horses urinate in your courtyards,

and return with the wives and children,

proudly, on every long-legged steed and fleet mare

that wheeled in every battlefield and valley.

So it is: our steeds are indeed milk-fed,

and war is kindled by the wind of dawn-going steeds.

And our swords, white-bladed, strip away

iron shields and the raider's skull.

God hemmed them in for His sacred bounds,

and for the Merciful's might, with barriers.

They lived at ease in their home, but were given instead,

in the days of Dhū Qarad, the faces of slaves.
